On Saturday 23rd July 2016, PSV Eindhoven proved far too strong for United in the first game of the Steel Park Cup and strolled to an easy 4-1 win with two goals in either half as Philippe Rommens and Albert Gudmondsson scored in the first half while Cody Gakpo and Joel Piroe scored in the second and Matt Wilks scored a consolation goal for United from the penalty spot. United were made to struggle by the well-organized Dutchmen. In a four team tournament, Corby Town took on Newcastle United later that day, while the hosts were to take on United in the Sunday Midday game and then PSV would play Newcastle United later that afternoon. The Leeds team was Theo Richardson, Alex Wollerton, Alfie McCalmont, Lavell, Anderson, Malik Wilks, Bobby Kamwa, Samuel Amissah, Clarke Oduor, McEvoy. Substitutes: Jack Croft (for Samuel Amissah), Matty Downing (for McEvoy), Henry Rollinson (for Clarke Odour), Ryan Ferguson (for Alex Wollerton), Lewis Knight (for Alfie McCalmont), Max Hill (for Lavell), Moses Abioye (for Tom Pearce), Callum Nicell. The PSV starting eleven was: Mike Van De Meulenhof; Dirk Abels, Damian Van Bruggen, Gokhan Kardes, Sven Blummel, Phillipe Rommens, Nikolai Laursen, Leandro Fernandes, Cody Gakpo, Albert Gudmondsson, Matthias Verreth. Their substitutes were: Michael Sadilek (for Damian Van Bruggen), Armando Obispo (for Phillipe Rommens), Joel Piroe (for Nikolai Laursen), Lennard Daneels (for Leandro Fernandes), Joey Konings (for Cody Gakpo). The Dutch side went ahead after just seven minutes when Clarke Odour fouled Leandro Fernandes just outside the penalty area and Phillippe Rommens’ dipping free kick sneaked into the corner of the net beyond the dive of Theo Richardson. PSV almost doubled their advantage two minutes later when Matthias Verreth headed wide from a centre by Nikolai Laursen. They did make it 2-0 in the nineteenth minute. A slick passing move ended with Laursen slipping the ball through to skipper Albert Gudmondsson, a survivor of last year’s Steel Park Cup squad, and he fired a fierce shot past Richardson. Gudmondsson almost scored again minutes later but on this occasion was foiled by the Leeds ‘keeper. PSV continued to dominate possession but it wasn’t until past the hour mark that the scoring was completed. Cody Gakpo fired in the sixty-ninth minute third goal and two minutes later substitute Joel Piroe, who minutes earlier had headed powerfully wide from a good position, nodded in at the second attempt after his first effort had been blocked by the replacement Leeds goalkeeper. Leeds finally got on the scoresheet with fifteen minutes remaining. Mallik Wilkes, their most dangerous forward throughout, was brought down as he carried the ball along the goal line and picked himself up to convert the penalty himself.

LEEDS UTD XI 1-4 PSV EINDHOVEN XI Saturday July 23rd 2016

Jong PSV Eindhoven made a strong start in their bid to retain the Steel Park Cup with an impressive victory over Leeds United. The Dutch side went ahead after just seven minutes when Clarke Odour fouled Leandro Fernandes just outside the penalty area and Phillippe Rommans’ dipping free kick sneaked into the corner of the net beyond the dive of Theo Richardson. PSV almost doubled their advantage two minutes later when Matthias Verreth headed wide from a centre by Nikolai Laursen. They did make it 2-0 in the 19th minute. A slick passing move ended with Laursen slipping the ball through to skipper Albert Gudmondsson – a survivor of last year’s Steel Park Cup squad – and he fired a fierce shot past Richadson. Gudmondsson almost scored again minutes later but on this occasion was foiled by the Leeds ‘keeper. PSV continued to dominate possession but it wasn’t until past the hour mark that the scoring was completed. Cody Galpko fired in the 69th minute third and two minutes later substitute Joel Piroe – who minutes earlier had headed powerfully wide from a good position – nodded in at the second attempt after his first effort had been blocked by the replacement Leeds goalkeeper. Leeds finally got on the scoresheet with fifteen minutes remaining. Mallik Wilkes, their most dangerous forward throughout, was brought down as he carried the ball along the goal line and picked himself up to convert the penalty himself.
